“Do I need medication to stop producing breast milk?”
“Does malt water really help?”
“Can I stop lactation naturally without taking medication?”
There is no single approach that works for everyone.
Before starting the process of lactation suppression, however, there is an even more important question:
👉 Do you truly need to stop breastfeeding, or does it only seem like your milk supply is insufficient?
Some mothers become concerned about low milk supply when their baby nurses frequently or shows short-term fluctuations in weight. However, breastfeeding can also be affected by the baby’s sucking efficiency, feeding position, feeding frequency, as well as the mother’s stress and fatigue.
For this reason, a professional assessment is recommended before deciding to suppress lactation.
▍Can lactation be suppressed without medication?
Cold compresses, appropriate breast support, and pain relievers when needed may help reduce breast swelling and discomfort. However, relieving discomfort is not the same as directly stopping milk production.
One of the key principles of gradual weaning is to progressively reduce breast stimulation and milk removal, allowing the body to gradually decrease milk production.
⚠️ It is generally not advisable to abruptly stop removing milk simply to dry up your supply faster. If your breasts become significantly engorged or painful, expressing a small amount of milk for comfort may help reduce discomfort and the risk of complications.
▍Do medications for lactation suppression work?
Certain medications, such as dopamine agonists including cabergoline, may suppress lactation. Other medications may also reduce milk production as a side effect.
However, a medication that can decrease milk supply is not necessarily appropriate for self-directed lactation suppression.
Each medication has its own indications, contraindications, and potential side effects. Whether medication is appropriate should therefore be determined by a physician based on your medical history and individual circumstances.
Please do not take medication for lactation suppression without professional medical advice.
▍Does “natural” mean safer?
Herbs such as peppermint and sage are often mentioned as possible ways to reduce milk production. However, many herbal approaches still lack sufficient human clinical evidence regarding effectiveness, appropriate dosage, and long-term safety.
So even when something is labeled “natural,” it does not necessarily mean that it is suitable or safe for every postpartum mother.
🌿 How can Traditional Chinese Medicine help?
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, treatment is individualized according to the mother’s postpartum condition, breast symptoms, and overall pattern of health.
Depending on the individual, TCM approaches may include:
▪️ Chinese herbal medicine, including preparations containing malt
▪️ Customized herbal formulas based on individual assessment
▪️ External therapies to help relieve breast discomfort
▪️ Acupuncture when clinically appropriate
The goal is not simply to find the “fastest” way to stop milk production.
Instead, the priority should be finding an approach that is appropriate, safe, and as comfortable as possible for your individual situation.
💡 If you are considering stopping breastfeeding, ask yourself these three questions first:
① Have I made the decision to stop breastfeeding?
② Do I currently have breast redness, swelling, warmth, pain, or fever?
③ Would gradual weaning, medical treatment, or TCM support be more appropriate for me?
If you experience persistent fever, significant breast redness or swelling, severe pain, or systemic symptoms, please seek medical evaluation promptly rather than relying solely on home remedies.
Stopping breastfeeding does not have to be something you simply “push through.”
Whether you decide to continue breastfeeding or begin the weaning process, understanding your individual condition can help you make a safer and more informed choice. ❤️
